As a Board Certified Massage Therapist with a certification in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, I specialize in reducing swelling after plastic surgery procedures like facelifts and tummy tucks. Many people have heard that their lymphatic system is a part of their immune system, but what is it exactly and how do all the parts of a Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment work together to help reduce swelling? Here are five fun facts about lymphatic massage:

  1. Lymphatic massage was first used to help sinus problems! Emil Vodder’s first clients were wealthy tourists in the South of France.
  2. Manual lymphatic drainage stimulates the body’s lymphatic system, relieving the tightness and heaviness that comes with post-surgical swelling.
  3. The deep abdominal strokes that begin every manual lymphatic drainage treatment stimulate lymph flow in the intestines and the entire body!
  4. Lymphatic massage can stimulate our body’s parasympathetic nervous system as well as the lymphatic system. Deeply relaxing, client’s sometimes drift off to sleep during the treatment.
  5. Our lymphatic system consists of lymph nodes, lymph vessels, the spleen, the thymus, the tonsils and Peyer’s patches in the intestine. Learn more about the lymphatic system here:
